Changpeng Zhao: Crypto Has Survived the Harshest Winter, Fundamentals Still Solid
2026-09-01
Changpeng Zhao, better known by the nickname CZ, delivered a notably optimistic assessment of the cryptocurrency industry at the Bitcoin Asia 2026 event in Hong Kong, stating that the sector has already passed through its toughest period.
Speaking to attendees, Zhao emphasized that the industry’s fundamentals remain strong, even as the market continues to evolve amid changing regulations.
RWA Tokenization: A Bright Spot
Zhao emphasized the increasingly growing potential of tokenizing real-world assets (RWAs), describing it as an important opportunity area. He argued that putting assets on a blockchain could eliminate traditional barriers related to time and borders, enabling global investors to connect more easily.
He noted that this approach could also improve liquidity for small- to mid-sized assets, which often struggle to attract capital through traditional channels. These remarks reflect a broader industry trend toward connecting traditional finance with blockchain technology—an area that has seen a significant rise in institutional interest in recent years.
A Global Legal Landscape: A Mixed Picture
Regarding regulatory issues, Zhao provided a comparative perspective on different legal jurisdictions. He praised the United Arab Emirates as the most advanced country in terms of cryptocurrency regulation, while noting that the United States is making rapid progress on rules for stablecoins and exchanges.
Japan is described as taking a friendly stance, and Hong Kong is rapidly developing as a hub. However, Singapore is assessed as relatively conservative. These remarks were made at a time when governments worldwide are struggling to balance innovation with investor protection.
The Maturity and Future Prospects of DEXs
Mr. Zhao also commented on the development of decentralized exchanges (DEXs), saying they have matured significantly over the past eight years in both technology and user awareness.
He believes the industry could achieve an even bigger leap if global regulations become easier. His comments reflect confidence in the resilience of the cryptocurrency ecosystem, despite past downturns and ongoing regulatory challenges facing major players in the industry.
