23rd February 2026 – (Hong Kong) A network engineer has been arrested on suspicion of stealing cryptocurrency worth approximately US$2.6 million (around HK$20.32 million) from clients of a financial technology company in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Police said they received a report at about 5pm on Sunday from the manager of a software engineering firm based at Concordia Plaza. The company, which operates a cryptocurrency trading platform, suspected that a male employee had misappropriated digital assets belonging to clients.
Officers attended the premises and, following preliminary inquiries, arrested a 34-year-old man surnamed Choi on suspicion of theft. The case has been handed over to the Yau Tsim District Criminal Investigation Team for further investigation. Sources indicated that the suspect had worked for the company as a network engineer for around four years and was responsible for managing its applications. Since January, the firm had received complaints from about 20 clients reporting missing cryptocurrency.
An internal review of system records allegedly revealed that the engineer had accessed the company’s database and viewed the affected accounts, prompting management to contact the police.
