A sophisticated fraud ring operating on online shopping platforms has been dismantled by Hong Kong police, resulting in the arrest of 11 individuals. The group allegedly used \u201cmock banknotes\u201d to deceive sellers of luxury items, including high-end watches and fine wines. Police reported three victims, collectively losing approximately HK$640,000.<\/p>\n
The arrests, which took place between 12th and 14th November, involved seven men and four women aged between 20 and 50 years old. Among the victims was Mr. Tsui, who lost four bottles of Karuizawa 18-year-old whisky valued at HK$133,000. He was tricked during a transaction when he was lured to a separate location under the pretext of completing a contract, only to find himself separated from his goods.<\/p>\n
According to Acting Superintendent Ko Ka-yi, this operation, named \u201cAngry Eyes,\u201d aimed to combat online shopping fraud. The police noted that the gang had been active since August, targeting sellers unsuspecting of the scam. The perpetrators would create an environment conducive to quick transactions, often in dimly lit settings, to facilitate their deceit.<\/p>\n
The police investigation involved extensive review of CCTV footage, helping to identify the roles of various gang members. The authorities have urged the public to exercise caution during online transactions, advising sellers to ensure that payment is secured before handing over goods.<\/p>\n
